Improperly classified documents,
Halliburton, ketchup
William Leonard, director of the Information
Security Oversight Office, told the House Government
Reform Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging
Threats and International Relations. He said the
amount of improperly classified information has been
"disturbingly increasing" since last year in "clear,
blatant violation" of regulations.
( http://www.govexec.com/dailyfed/0804/082404c1.htm ) Here's a prime example: In March 2003 the Pentagon awarded Halliburton's subsidiary a sole-source contract (awarded without bidding) to restore and operate Iraqi oil wells. The contract was classified. It could be worth as much as $7 billion. Since they took office, Mr. Bush and Mr. Cheney have helped Halliburton rise from 22nd largest military contractor, to 7th largest in 2003. Mr. Cheney holds Halliburton stock options and has received $1,997,525 in payments from Halliburton in 2001, 2002, and 2003. ( Mr. Cheney's financial disclosure statements ) In light of this information, it is patently offensive to hear some Republicans complain about Kerry's wife owning a minor portion of the Heinz Corporation. I suppose Republicans fear that Mr. Kerry may show favoritism in selecting which ketchup is used in the Whitehouse while he is president? Oh, and if you consider me to be a "liberal" or "Democrat" and for that reason, you are pre-disposed to not consider the crap I spew worthy of your consideration, then, how about what the Pentagon has to say? "Pentagon auditors have accused the company [Halliburton] of overcharging for food, fuel and other services. For a time the Army considered withholding payments..." ( Fact Check NY Times 9/28/04 ) |
